An urban adventure

Catherine Andersen placed sixth in the 2008 Arnold Classic Amateur IFBB International Bodybuilding, Fitness & Figure Championships.

It’s not exactly Navy SEAL training, although Milwaukee Adventure Boot Camp (MABC) gets women into cardio drills, weight training, hiking, kickboxing and related muscle-strengthening programs. A-List Fitness owner Catherine Andersen’s new program takes participants beyond their regular exercise regime, and covers proper nutrition and even motivational training.

"The ‘camp’ is designed to help women tone their bodies by reducing body fat and increasing stamina through core strengthening, resistance exercises and cardio circuits," says Andersen.

The certified personal trainer laughs that she’s often referred to by panting, puffing clients as the resident "drill instructor." But, the trim/fit (naturally) Andersen added playfully, "It’s fun." Most participants are in the 35 to 55 age range. "It’s for women of all fitness levels," she says of the national program for which she had to be certified. For incentives and to keep up morale, participants receive pre- and post-camp evaluations to track their progress.

Andersen pointed out that MABC’s studies from around the country show hardworking participants who are consistent in their workouts see an average of a 3 to 5 percent reduction in body fat. "Their posture is also better, they’re more relaxed, have lost from 5 to 12 pounds and an inch or more from their waistline," she continues.

The sessions are held five days a week for four weeks, but mini-camps of shorter duration were initially held to acquaint locals with the boot camp mission. "No, it’s not for people in trouble," Andersen laughs.

No slouch when it comes to exercise, Andersen, 38, participated in the Figure Class for the invitation-only 2008 Arnold Classic Amateur IFBB International Bodybuilding, Fitness & Figure Championships; she came in eighth in her first show.

MABC summer camps are planned for June 30-July 25 and Aug. 4-29. Not one to leave out the men, Andersen also features several coed sessions. In addition, she has a men’s boot camp geared only to men. Next year, she may also hold a summer boot camp for kids. "It would be something different, helping improve self-esteem and burn off extra energy," she says.
