“Why create
a house you feel
uncomfortable
in for fear of
messing it up?”
asks architect
Tom Kubala of
Kubala Washatko
Architects.
Two and a half
years ago, Kubala
and his son began to build their own Cedarburg home to “achieve
roughness. The whole idea,” Kubala explains, “was to avoid a
construction system that would produce a lifeless, flat surface.” Concrete
floors, the use of recycled timber as lintels over interior windows and
interior and exterior plaster over concrete blocks stacked without mortar
add texture and interest. The ziggurat to the right is part of the
fireplace along an end wall in the main room downstairs.
By continuing the brick veneer wall through the space and incorporating an
opening into the utility room,Todd Rabidoux and Scott Humber of Lakeside
Development Company designed this breakfast room to appear as if it were
a later addition to the home of Greg and Debbie Nurre of Mequon.
The utility
room becomes an
integral part of the
volumetric space of
the breakfast room.
A wood sill and
planter were added
to the opening to
enhance the
space by adding
color, softening
the brick face
and adding a
sound buffer
between the
spaces.
