BritInn

People who may recall the old Shorewood Inn at the BritInn’s location will be surprised. It shrunk. Now it’s a cozy pub with an energetic menu, a long list of tap brews and one hard cider. Since it’s only open for lunch on Fridays, my friend and I checked out the fish fry and found it to our liking. It’s a pub, with both chairs and stools at the tables, a prominent bar and an enthusiastic darts tournament on the telly. Server David Price spoke like a Scot, but it’s no surprise: "I come from northern England," he revealed.

Except for that Friday lunch and a Sunday brunch, the Inn opens every day at 4 p.m., but "all hours are tentative." The pub serves a daily soup, salads, appetizers and many sandwiches. The most unique is the Butty, a buttered bun and a choice of fillings to be enhanced with malt vinegar, HP sauce or simply ketchup. You pick from egg, sausage or bacon, or double it up and call it a Combo Butty.

On Sunday mornings BritInn offers The Full English Breakfast, a tasty combo of sausage, bacon, fried eggs, fried bread, fried tomato, baked beans and "bubble and squeak" — veggies mixed with mashed potatoes.

You’ll have to loosen your knickers after that lot. – Cari Taylor-Carlson
