A French
limestone fireplace is sandwiched between sleek ebonized
millwork to create a striking focal wall. A sectional sofa in
a "soft as butter" neutral superkidskin leather
dominates the room, providing plenty of space to lounge and
enjoy casual conversation. Pattern and texture combine to add
interest in the space. Rattan lounge chairs with a red,
Asian-inspired pattern and a zebra-patterned desk chair are
memorable accents in the room.

Jon Schlagenhaft of Jon Schlagenhaft
Design incorporated his client’s ’40s, ’50s and ’60s vintage
furniture into a new condo nestled into the Mequon countryside. The
home has a spacious floor plan, yet has the appeal of a modern, cozy
cottage. While maintaining a neutral background, Schlagenhaft added
punches of color and updated vintage pieces to achieve a fresh look. A
contrast of creamy neutrals and ebonized finishes with metallic
accents throughout create a classic yet contemporary appeal. He used
texture, pattern and details that are inspired by the outdoors to
infuse a sense of intimacy and comfort. Artwork and accessories with
birds, florals, hunting and garden scenes help bring the outdoors in,
along with the ample daylight and landscaped views through the
numerous windows. Chenille, luxurious leather, bamboo and rattan are
rich and comforting, while Asian-inspired fabrics and furnishings
offer a Zen-like appeal that complements the soothing neutral palette.

A
handcrafted wallcovering in a snow leopard print creates a rich
backdrop for a keyhole-shaped mirror and figurine sconces.
"This space is subtle but offbeat; it is hip and fun,"
designer Jon Schlagenhaft says.

A bronze-colored, hatch-marked
wallcovering complements the Louis XVI hand-carved mahogany
mantel with a St. Laurent marble surround. A handmade wool rug
in an Art Deco Chinese cloud pattern combines beiges, bronzes
and reds to create a signature element in the room. A vintage
Dunbar sofa in bronze chenille is paired with a lounge chair and
ottoman in red English leather for cozy fireside conversations.
Horses, hunting scenes and floral patterns add a touch of the
outdoors.

A custom
marble and limestone mosaic medallion is a centerpiece in the
foyer’s limestone floor. A stone urn with bronze serpents on a
custom pedestal displays a grand floral arrangement that infuses
color and fragrance into the home. A custom chandelier and
matching sconces take cues from garden observatory armillary
spheres and offer a contemporary edge to the elegant entry.

This area of
the home combines a kitchen, dinette and sunroom for a
multifunctional space. Granite countertops, ebonized cabinetry,
limestone floors and stainless steel appliances create a classic
kitchen design. Over-scaled pulls selected for the cabinetry add
a striking detail for a contemporary edge. Between the kitchen
and dining table, a desk-height granite countertop creates a
work area, a favorite spot for the owner. "Good design is
sometimes just simple, clean and utilitarian," Schlagenhaft
says.
