Chef Sandy D'Amato

By JORDAN DECHAMBRE-CHILDERS

December 2008

Sandy D’Amato — the brainchild with his wife, Angie, behind Coquette Café, Harlequin Bakery and the critically acclaimed Sanford Restaurant — is well known as one of the top chefs in Milwaukee. And he’s no stranger to national attention. D’Amato is a former winner of the Perrier Jouët Best Chef: Midwest award from the James Beard Foundation, and who can forget he was one of 12 chefs in the nation to be personally chosen by Julia Child to cook for her 80th birthday celebration. Now he’s helping feed America in a new way — by donating his time and talents (including the recipe for Chargrilled Wisconsin Smoked Mozzarella Cheese with Prosciutto, Swiss Chard and Anchovy Sauce, on behalf of the Green Bay Packers) to Taste of the NFL. My Galleries

Katie Gingrass Gallery and the Milwaukee Art Museum

My Nights Out

I’m usually working, so a lot of our nights out are days at the movies. I like going regularly to Beans & Barley, Triskeles, Tutto and Speed Queen.

My Giving Back

We’ve been working with Taste of The NFL for the last six years in various events fighting hunger. The proceeds go to local food banks and Second Harvest in Milwaukee and around the country.

My Shopping

I’m a pretty monochromatic guy; different shades of black. I spend a lot of shopping time at Banana Republic.

My Inspirations

From the time I moved back to Milwaukee in 1980, it’s been the West Allis Farmers Market, although I try to visit the other markets on off days.

My Milwaukee

The lakefront, biking anywhere through the city, the Brewers, the Zoo, Usinger’s and The Spice House.

My Calendar

First and foremost the Wisconsin State Fair, Bastille Days and Festa Italiana.

My Outdoors

Biking, tennis and once-a-year softball tournament — Sanford vs. Coquette/Harlequin at our restaurant picnic at Lake Park.

My To-do List

Attend a World Series game with the Brewers crushing the Yankees.
