Clothes might not totally make the man, or the woman. But a
well-assembled outfit sure goes a long way in establishing a presence.
Milwaukee’s couture crowd has a gamut of creative vision, from
flamboyant to blend-in and everything in-between.
For a so-called conservative town, we do quite well, thank you,
when defining what it means to be well-dressed. The city’s shops —
whether boutique, consignment or mainline — provide the building
blocks of style for dressing up or dressing down. One’s look depends
on the weather (this is Wisconsin, after all), mood, budget or
occasion.
A fashion sense is strictly personal, as exemplified by the
following individuals who are known around town for having that
special "it." These are the best of the best.
|
Sarah Brucker, St. Francis
Occupation: Owner, Blush
My Style: Being a makeup artist, I
build around my lipstick. I don’t like it to match my
outfits, either. My lips are my real accessories. If I do hot
pink on my lips, I’ll wear a cream something with jeans. I
love shoes from Cole Haan and Louis Vuitton purses, pairing
expensive with inexpensive. During the day, I wear blazers,
skinny jeans, stilettos. But I also have a party closet at the
salon so I can have a fresh outfit when stepping out after
work.
My Philosophy: I try not to follow any
rules. If it looks fabulous and I love it, I wear it. You also
don’t have to be head-to-toe designer. A piece from Goodwill
looks great with something higher end.

Bevan Baker, Milwaukee
Occupation: Milwaukee Health Commissioner
My Style: There’s nothing better in
the summer than walking down the street in my seersucker suit,
bow tie and Panama hat. I had the good fortune to have a father
who was a marvelous Renaissance man, who taught me to tie bow
ties. It takes hutzpah to wear them, and I do enjoy it. I’m
accustomed to wearing nice Cole shirts from England, always with
French cuffs and links. With striping, you get a lot of
flexibility for the tie, using it for a splash of bright color.
I lean toward a multiuse pant; charcoal is a favorite.
Fashion Philosophy: Look for fabric. If
a shirt doesn’t sit well, it won’t work on you. Never stray
from what looks good for you, stick with it.
|
|
Mike Sutton, Milwaukee
Occupation: Fashion Photographer
My Style: I know exactly what I have in
my closet so I can go in there to mix and match, taking a bit
here and there to put together a look. I have a basic 8- or
9-year-old black suit from Banana Republic that I can wear all
sorts of ways, with one piece here and another there. But I’ve
also worn a military-style blazer with a tux shirt and velour
vest. It depends on where I am as to what I wear. What goes in
Miami, L.A. or NYC doesn’t go here; you’d stand out. I
prefer to blend in.
Fashion Philosophy: Less is more. Being
creative doesn’t mean overdressing. To be fashionable, you don’t
need to spend a lot.

Carolyn Peters, Milwaukee
Occupation: Full-time mom
My Style: From Monday through Friday
with the kids, I go really casual, but still sporty with jeans
and a tank top; or maybe with something by lululemon. I
especially like suits that you can wear both to pilates and to
the store, but you don’t look like you just came from the gym.
On our nights out, I go for straight lines, with dresses by
Nicole Miller, Suzi Chin and Catherine Malandrino, which are
trendy but simple. I let a bracelet tell the jewelry story, but
I also like big earrings.
Fashion Philosophy: We don’t have a
lot of closet space so I like quality clothing I can wear more
than once.
Jay Peters, Milwaukee
Occupation: Domestic trader, Artisan
Partners
My Style: At work, we wear business
casual, mostly slacks and a button-down or even a golf shirt in
summer. Suits are worn when clients are on on-site. I like gray
slacks, with a lot of solid blue or striped shirts. When going
out on the weekend, I go for regular blue jeans with a
button-down ... outside the risk curve. I have sweaters of all
kinds and quality shoes by Johnston & Murphy or Allen
Edmonds.
Fashion Philosophy: I like a good flow
to my clothes, but nothing that really stands out as with a
splash of bright color. I prefer to blend in with the crowd.

Sherry Bantug, Milwaukee
Occupation: Marketing manager, Milwaukee
Public Market
My Style: I’m not one you can easily
pinpoint as to style. What I love is all over the board,
dressing for the occasion. I can do designer jeans with a little
T-shirt along with a baseball cap; or a gorgeous gown and a
brocaded jacket, worn with a pearl necklace. I love accessories,
especially handbags and hats that frame the face. Fine fabric is
my thing, especially with texture and a lot of details. Trina
Turk, Tidi and Shanel Regier are among my favorite designers. I
like presence, that’s for sure, with bold prints and lots of
colors
Fashion Philosophy: If I look good, I
feel good.

 |
Russell Levin, Milwaukee
Occupation: Co-owner, Picardy Shoe
Parlour
My Style: I am somewhat conservative,
but can go a little flamboyant in the sense of wearing a more
colorful shirt. I have more leeway because of my work, wearing a
jacket or blazer one day and not the next, only deciding that
morning depending on the weather and my mood. I like to mix it
up, favoring Etro for separates and probably Armani. I love
French cuffs, watches, shoes and even belts, mostly black and
brown. I let the buckle be the statement.
Fashion Philosophy: If you can only
afford a few things, buy quality. Wear what’s comfortable for
you. But occasionally try something different, get out of the
box and experiment.
|
Andrew Wadsworth, Milwaukee
Occupation: Benefit specialist, Rauser
Agency
My Style: I can’t resist looking at suits, especially Ted Baker and anything British-tailored that
really makes a guy look great. To complement the look, cuffed
shirts are the best, along with ties, such as those by
Alexander. Mine are patterned since I don’t go much for solid
colors. For shoes, I must have 20 pair, mostly black and brown,
but even an olive green. For my accessorizing, watches are an
asset; plus glasses.
Fashion Philosophy: Figure out what you
like and let it work for you. If you don’t feel comfortable in
what you are wearing, don’t wear it. When you look good, you
feel good.

Judi Rath, Milwaukee
Occupation: Chemical engineer/project
manager, SC Johnson
My Style: I go for clean lines because I’m
petite, so that helps makes me look taller/thinner. I like an
updated take on vintage classics or the vintage classics
themselves, with my favorites from the ’60s and ’70s.
Accessories; minimal but impactful. Shoes! Those Italians know
what they are doing. I can’t survive without black. When my
skin is looking sallow I put on some pearls to reflect light to
my face. I love leather too. I have always loved Pucci and
Missoni-inspired prints. I don’t sacrifice comfort for
fashion; I make them work together, appreciating great fabric,
design and construction.
Fashion Philosophy: Feel great in what
you are wearing and have it express who you are and what you are
feeling that day. It’s your costume for the day or the event.
|
Mike Haessly, Shorewood
Occupation: Director of marketing,
Neroli Spa & Salon; M-Style/wardrobe consultant
My Style: I guess I’m professional
with an edge. My ideal combination is a classic black suit
combined with a T-shirt or a retro-fitted shirt. I also find
that a white shirt, dress slacks, loafers and fitted leather
blazer instead of a sports coat goes well too. I prefer the
classics of Hugo Boss and Valentino; for trendy, it’s
D-Squared and Helmut Lang; and Donald Pliner shoes. I
accessorize with belts and scarves. I really love high-end jeans
paired with loafers, a T-shirt and a blazer. I’m compulsive,
readying next day’s clothing when I get home from work.
Fashion Philosophy: Be an individual, but still listen to your girlfriend or wife. Look for quality of
fabric.

Laura Cole, Milwaukee
Occupation: Owner, Aala Reed
My Style: I’ve always been a
clothes-hound, following every trend from the ’80s
argyle-preppy to the off-the-shoulder "Flashdance"
looks, to shoulder-padded blazers and bold colors in the ’90s.
However, I always keep in mind colors and shapes that are
flattering and comfortable, which usually ends up being a dress
or skirt with a sleek line that’s both sexy yet sophisticated.
I’m a huge fan of the 1920s and have a large selection of
cloches.
Fashion Philosophy: Never follow a trend
because you’ve been told "it’s what’s hot."
There are always variations which may suit you better and which
you can incorporate into your wardrobe. Invest in a few dresses
to work with appropriate hosiery and shoes. Then make it playful
for "girls’ night" with bold jewelry and strappy
sandals.
Preston D. Cole, Milwaukee
Occupation: Environmental
Services Superintendent,
Department of Public Works
My Style: Updated traditional clothing
with flair. I work in government, but don’t want to look like
I do! I believe the pocket square is the new tie in the right
occasion, but love to rock a cool shirt/tie combo with color and
patterns. It brings traditional suits alive. A smart looking
sport jacket and cool shirt are a must when going casual. Never
a Polo shirt and khakis ... eek.
Fashion Philosophy: Surprise, surprise,
surprise ... stop doing the same ’ol thing. Shaking up my
wardrobe keeps me young.

Katherine Zvesper, Milwaukee and
Hartland
Occupation: Owner, Au Courant
My Style: I go back to the basics, the
classics from the ’30s and ’50s, like in the old movies. I
wear gloves and hats a lot and carry purses. I have lots of
shoes. I love the yin-yang of colors, doing something
unexpected, and to embellish with antique jewelry. I’m in the
fashion business, so I sell only what I want to wear.
Fashion Philosophy: Since I like the
classic look, I keep my clothes forever. They don’t go out of
style; they’re timeless. If they looked good on you once, they’ll look good again.
Kyle Cherek, Milwaukee
Occupation: Man About Town; host,
"Milwaukee Foodie"
My Style: I lean toward dressy on a
daily basis. I definitely think the Mods had it right with their
eye on the Italians ... a slimmer suit, tapered leg and mixing
color and pattern as a basic daily event. Tailoring is key. Even
the most basic hem can turn someone from shlumpy to crisp for
the cost of a movie ticket.
Fashion Philosophy: Clothing is terribly
powerful stuff. It’s like all good communication, it can be arriviste and authentic all in the same moment.
Cynthia Stoll, Whitefish Bay
Occupation: Owner, Lake Hill House
Private Jewelers
My Style: I prefer a refined, enduring
style, although I can be flamboyant. But it’s not going to be
a "cool," trendy or cutting-edge look. Fads come and
go. I appreciate texture, the lines and details of clothing,
especially the fit. I don’t think there is any such thing as
bad color, if used in the right amount or what is right for you.
Fashion Philosophy: Know who you are.
Something can fit well but if it doesn’t make you happy or it’s
uncomfortable, why bother?
Tony Chakonas, Milwaukee
Occupation: Community volunteer; antique
jewelry dealer
My Style: Modern classics, that’s it;
my closet is full of Yves Saint Laurent. I appreciate an updated
take on traditional designs, such as a slimmer fit on a suit. I’m
as comfortable in a V-neck as I am with a shirt — I really go
for a white shirt with cuff links. I have a selection from my
dad that I use all the time. My favorite accessories include
patterned pocket squares for flair, for fun.
Fashion Philosophy: Never buy cheap
shoes.

Kim Murphy
Occupation: Anchor/reporter, WITI FOX 6
News
My Style: I’m mostly classic, but
bring in my own personality for accessories, such as scarves and
jewelry. And heels, gotta have my heels, usually about 2 1/2
inches, which I guess gives me presence because I’m 5 feet, 10
inches in my bare feet. I just don’t feel complete wearing
flats. I love rich colors, such as burgundy, black and mocha,
because it complements my skin. I’m a jeans girl when I’m
not working, especially Seven For All Mankind and Joe’s Jeans.
Fashion Philosophy: You have to accept
your body for what it is. It’s a package that includes your
hair and skin color. Know what you feel comfortable with and
stick with it.

Kelly Neumann, Milwaukee
Occupation: Interior designer, Vyolette
Interior Design
My Style: It’s similar to my
decorating style, which can range from conservative to bright. I
appreciate attention to subtle detail, but a little bit goes a
long way. I think there is an appropriate outfit for each
occasion, I don’t wear one look all day long. I like to
associate my clothes with what I am doing at that particular
time. For me, shoes and a handbag absolutely round out a basic
outfit. In my new house, I have a dream walk-in closet, which
forces me to keep organized. That really helps in knowing what I
have.
Fashion Philosophy: Don’t be afraid of a little color or texture. Be patient and build a wardrobe. Do
speed shopping if you know what you like.

Curt Stern, Milwaukee
Occupation: Managing partner, Jon
Schlagenhaft Design
My Style: I like a pulled-together look,
where it shows that I put thought into what I am wearing,
updating every season. I know which cut of shirts, pants and
jackets works best for my body. I prefer a suit with an English
cut for a longer look: high armholes, tapered waist and two side
vents at the back of the jacket. I don’t wear pleated pants
and prefer V-necks to crew necks; plus cashmere; and a heeled
boot. Important accessories: shoes, belts, watches, sunglasses
and firearms (just kidding). I know which designers work best
for me: John Varvatos, Loro Piana, Tony Melillo, Gucci, Yves
Saint Laurent, Roberto Cavalli, Cesare Paciotti.
Fashion Philosophy: Appearance says a
lot before you utter a word. I try to do my best at everything I
participate in, so clothing is simply a natural extension of
that principle.
|
Cindy H. Molloy, Milwaukee
Occupation: Owner, Molloy’s
My Style: I like feminine clothes, not
frilly but soft. Interesting fabric and texture always appeals
to me. I tend to favor skirts but also wear pants when I find a
well-cut style with a fuller leg. I always have a jacket or
another topper, along with accessories to make the outfit mine,
such as a belt, great earrings, shawl or shoes. I favor Lida
Baday, Tom and Linda Platt and Christian Louboutin for his
red-soled shoes.
Fashion Philosophy: Following a trend
can be fine, but the challenge is finding the designer who
handles a trend in the best way for you. Then take it and adapt
it to yourself.

Stephanie Sherman, Milwaukee
Occupation: Co-owner, Lela
My Style: I like to sparkle; combining
function with pretty things especially when the weather is gray.
I have this beret with sequins that transformed my winter. Maybe
I looked like a disco ball, but that was OK. I am a bit of a
tomboy who loves 1960s party dresses that make me dance. Curves
are important. Lately, I wear my grandma’s clothes. I cherish
clothes with a past. I love bright colors and bold patterns by
designers like Joy Han’s Voom line.
Fashion Philosophy: It’s not what or
who you wear, it’s how you wear it. Fashion is about
self-expression. I dress in what makes me happy. You can look
like a million bucks without spending a lot of money.
Jeff Sherman, Milwaukee
Occupation: President/co-owner,OnMilwaukee.com
My Style: Pretty classic, but fun. I did
the suit and tie thing early in my career, now they are reserved
for weddings and other similar functions. Cool shirts that get
reaction (and, hopefully compliments) and great shoes are a
must: Aala Reed, Detour, shoo and MODA3 fulfill most of my
needs. Jeans work many days, but sport coats, great T-shirts,
nice pants and vintage finds from the wife round out the closet.
Fashion Philosophy: Not sure if I have a
true fashion philosophy. Confidence makes the clothes. Smiles
and a positive attitude always help too. Looking good and
feeling good go together.
Jacob (Jake) T. Sherman, Milwaukee
Occupation: Son of Stephanie and
JeffSherman (Future mayor of Milwaukee, onlyif he so desires)
My Style: More boy, than baby. T-shirts
with self-made drool design are my favorites. Dad says anything
with Marquette colors is cool; I can’t talk or disagree at
this point. Shoes, no need. Diapers are still a necessity, but
neatly covered up with sporty pants or a soft onesee. Skull caps
rock and Mom loves me in my green newsboy cap from Sprout! and
in vintage stuff too. Honestly, though, naked fits me fine.
Fashion Philosophy: I’m a downtown
baby, always on the move, so my philosophy (I assume at some
point I’ll know what that word actually means) is all about
fun, creativity and self-expression. But, I’m 7 months old, so
that will change quickly!
|
Jessie Freschl, Shorewood
Occupation: Owner, Gigi of Mequon;
mom-to-be
My Style: Our store has been in business
for 49 years, and the most influential people on my fashion
sense were two very classy women: my mother, Bev Berson, and my
grandma, Toba Goodman. I really like Yigal Azrourel’s designs.
He’s Israeli-born and now works in New York doing marvelous
things with fabric. His leather jackets can go over evening wear
or more casual clothing. I also like Carolina Herrera, whose
outfits are really lady-like. She understands a woman’s body.
My favorite color is orange, usually a coral in spring and a
burnt orange in autumn.
Fashion Philosophy: I like to mix
different designers and to take one key piece and accessorize
it. I also like to wear something that’s comfortable.
