Mount Mary College’s Historic Costume Collection showcases some
of the most innovative clothing designs in fashion history. The
exhibit’s current theme, Chic Shapes, highlights how over time
fashion designers have created trends inspired by architecture, such
as columns, spheres, cones and the hourglass. Not to be missed are the
"New Look" 1949 black taffeta dress by Nettie Rosenstein,
worn by Jane Bradley Pettit; a gold lamé empire silhouette evening
gown by Irene (pictured); and a stunning 1968 yellow satin evening
gown by Balenciaga. "These are timeless, classic pieces that have
withstood the test of time and are still beautiful," says
Elizabeth Gaston, historic costume curator. The college’s full
collection holds more than 10,000 pieces. Chic Shapes is open 10
a.m.-4 p.m. Monday-Friday through June 1. For more information, call
(414) 258-4810 or go to www.mtmary.edu.
