Star style

As a contestant on the new TLC show "Who are you Wearing?," Shorewood High School graduate Annie Soderstrom didn’t just get the chance to meet a celebrity. She also had the opportunity to dress her for a red carpet event. "It was so much fun, but it was also very stressful and surreal," she says of her week-long reality television experience in Los Angeles. "There were about 800 applicants, and they chose 40 of us for the season."

The premise of the show is simple. Four new designers are introduced to a celebrity and given information about an upcoming red carpet event. They’re given 20 minutes to sketch and concept before presenting their ideas to the celebrity.

"At that point, one designer is eliminated," says Soderstrom, who worked with actress Holly Robinson Peete.

With a $100 budget, the three remaining designers visit a fabric store to buy their materials and are given 24 hours to sew. Then, they present their garments to the celebrity, who eliminates another designer.

"The two remaining designers have an hour for a final fitting, and believe me, that’s not enough time to make those kinds of alterations," she adds.

There’s one last round, and the celebrity picks her favorite, which she wears to her event.

New York-based Soderstrom is a fashion design graduate of Cornell University.

"I designed all the way through college and worked for both Michael Kors and Donna Karan," she says. "I still design in my free time, but I’ve decided to pursue a career as a buyer instead."

Soderstrom was asked to apply for "Who are you Wearing?" after trying out for "Project Runway," and making it to the top 45 before being cut.

Did she get cut this time around? Soderstrom can’t say, so you’ll have to watch and find out.

TLC’s "Who are you Wearing?," hosted by Keisha Whitaker, premiered in late August. Soderstrom appears in the seventh episode, which is expected to air Oct. 3.
