Heart secrets

July 2009

Columbia St. Mary’s Hospital of Wisconsin recently launched a women’s heart program that takes an interactive approach to fighting heart disease. The program consists of a three-step process, beginning with a shared medical appointment among eight women. A physician thoroughly explains the risk factors associated with heart disease, including lifestyle choices and family genetics. Then each participant meets with a practitioner to examine her personal risk factors. Following the shared and individual appointments, the patients are able to use the equipment at the hospital to make sustainable changes over their lifetimes. According to Dr. Patricia Dolhun, medical director of the Women’s Heart Secrets Program and practicing gynecologist at Columbia St. Mary’s, many women lack the resources or time needed to engage in preventative measures against heart disease. The program addresses the needs of women in the community by combining education and medicine. "I think we will really make a difference in the lives of women in Milwaukee," said Dolhun. "It’s very rewarding."
