How to Get Your Perfect Cut

Bjorn Nasett, Stylist
Beauty, Milwaukee

The search for the perfect hairstyle has been an ongoing quest since the dawn of mankind’s ego. Here are my top 10 suggestions for getting it.

1. Consultation is everything — make sure it is thorough.

2. Have pictures to show your stylist.

3. Be realistic in your wants.

4. Be adamant in communicating your needs.

5. Let the stylist know what has NOT worked for you in the past.

6. Ask for a couple of different options.

7. Ask for styling tips and what products to use to achieve it.

8. Ask how often you will need to maintain it.

9. Be realistic in your commitment to said style, otherwise ask for another option.

10. Be open to change, something as small as adding bangs or layers to your current cut can do wonders.

These are the most honest ways that I know to really start a good relationship with a hairdresser. Remember, a top-notch stylist will not want to change you, but instead point out ways to bring out your best through their expertise.

How to Find the Right Eyewear

Paula Hornbeck, Owner
Eye Candy, Delafield

Many people find it very challenging to select new eyewear. This is exactly the reason I opened Eye Candy — to give people the help they need in a positive and fun environment. Here are some things to think about when selecting new eyewear. Because glasses are worn on your face, they are part of your "look" more so than any other fashion item. So your eyewear should reflect how you see yourself. But remember, we have different aspects to our lives and personalities. You may need more than one look — professional for the office or fun and funky for the weekends. Too many people try to get all of their eyewear needs met in one pair and it becomes a compromise that really doesn’t work all that well. Keep an open mind as you look for a new style. Just because you’ve liked a certain style in the past, doesn’t mean that a new style won’t look great too. Remember, there is a lot of variety in eyewear. You can look contemporary without being too trendy or as hip as you want. Try a new shape or a different color — you might be surprised how much you like the "new you." If you ask someone to help you decide, be sure he or she is a good judge of what looks good on you and will give his or her honest opinion. A good optician will weigh all of these factors and will find the right style for the individual as well as evaluate the fit of the frame and how suitable it will be for the prescription.

How to Feel Sexy No Matter What You are Wearing

Jordan Dechambre-Childers, Fashion Editor
M: Milwaukee’s Lifestyle Magazine

Ooh, feeling sexy. It’s a great sensation, isn’t it?

And what makes it even better is how sexy you feel is exactly how sexy you want to feel.

In other words — it’s all in your head.

Being sexy is all about being confident. And it starts with being comfortable in your own skin. Even the most stunning Chanel gown will wilt if the woman wearing it doesn’t feel like an exquisite flower.

There’s one thing I tell myself when I need to boost my self-esteem and feel sexy again: The only person you have to please is yourself. Don’t get dressed up, apply makeup or spend hours at the salon unless you are doing it for you and only you.

What you look like on the outside has no bearing upon how you should feel on the inside.

If you are a good person, you are beautiful.

I believe the best way to feel sexy is to be true to yourself. If you can do that, you’ll be happier, sexier and more confident than you ever thought possible.

How to Accessorize with Style

Faye Wetzel, Owner
Faye’s 1 and Faye@play, Mequon and Brookfield

Accessories are the easiest (and cheapest) way to update and change a wardrobe. Think about a little black dress with pearls, it’s a classic. Trade the pearls for a bib necklace of mixed metals, and you’re rockin’ this year’s edgy urban look.

There is nothing demure about fall 2009 accessories. Big is better and more is more. Feathers adorn everything from head bands to necklaces to handbags. Gold is fresher than silver, but mixing metals makes everybody happy. Look for wide cuff bracelets, charm bracelets, pearls — the bigger the better — and jeweled chokers and pendants. Snake motifs are popular. Studs and grommets add a rock ’n roll vibe to any ensemble. Religious iconography jewelry gets everybody’s blessing.

We’re all looking for value these days. And, for my money, few fashion purchases afford greater value than accessories. Accessories usually transcend seasons — they certainly add versatility to a wardrobe — and, they require virtually no care. Also, I’m a big believer in the high/low chic concept — combining expensive and inexpensive items in our wardrobe. There are some amazing pieces of costume jewelry to be had for very little money. I’m wearing some of them right now!

How to Have Beautiful Skin

Rocio Yousif, Spa Coordinator
SIER Wellness MediSpa, Mequon

I believe almost anyone can achieve beautiful skin. It will of course, take a little work and consistency. Here are the rules I live by, and am always asked, "What do you do to have such beautiful skin?" Prevention. Protection. Correction.

The No. 1 essential for your skin today is to protect it from the environmental elements such as sun, smoke and air pollution. Americans have been hearing this message for years and I still find it hard to convince people that prevention works. A wide spectrum sunblock, along with products that contain antioxidants have been proven to offer optimal photo protection — preventing premature aging and reducing lines and wrinkles.

Your skin is going to age — it is a natural process — but you can slow it down by using corrective products that repair, lighten and exfoliate your skin to give it a more youthful appearance.

Laser treatments are another tool to improve the overall appearance of your skin. They can reverse signs of sun damage, such as, brown spots and broken blood vessels, as well as smooth the texture of your skin. In addition, laser can tighten and resurface the skin with minimum down time.

Facials are very important at any age. Find an aesthetician you trust and stick to a routine. If you do, you will see results.

Skin care products are a bit like clothes: You are better off investing in a solid piece that is going to stay with you and make you look and feel good.
