In search of the perfect smile
When it comes to your teeth, shape, size, symmetry and color all play a role

Beauty may well be in the eye of the beholder, but when it comes to a winning smile, it’s also in the numbers — the length of your teeth, the amount of gum showing, and other measurable factors. So, how do you capture the perfect smile?

Sparkling white teeth is one element, but certainly not the only ingredient that goes into the mix. In fact, teeth that are too brilliantly white don’t look natural, and may cause friends to grab their sunglasses when they see you coming. "Teeth shouldn’t be any whiter than the whites of your eyes," says Dr. Matt Smith of Stoneridge Dental in Waukesha. "An ideal smile has a healthy foundation, including frequent brushing, flossing and cleaning, of course, but we also consider tooth shape and size, and how much of the tooth is exposed."

Symmetry and proportion of the teeth relative to one another is important. "The two upper front teeth should be 100 percent exposed in a wide smile, although men tend to show less tooth. Preferably, the two central teeth should be mirror images of one another. Even a subtle variation can result in a crooked-appearing smile," Smith says. Fortunately, these conditions can be improved or corrected by the application of porcelain tooth veneers or crowns. Veneers are very thin, custom-made shells of tooth-colored materials designed to cover the front surface of teeth, while a crown completely caps or covers a tooth or implant.

Wider than normal gaps between the teeth can tend to make a smile less attractive, says Dr. Dale Rottman of Thiensville. "Gaps can be corrected with veneers or by filling in the gaps with bonding. Depending on the size of the gap, crowns can also be used," he says.

If teeth are crowded or very crooked, braces may be the answer, says Dr. Ralph Pamenter of Brookfield. "Most people who come in for a smile makeover don’t want to get braces, but it might be the best solution. A product called Six Month Smile is a new kind of orthodontia that offers straight teeth in less time, on average four to eight months," he says.

A "gummy" smile can also detract from a perfect smile. "Exposing too much gum tissue can make the teeth appear shorter, depending upon the gum level. Sometimes, as part of a smile makeover, the gums are contoured so that the gum lines are at the same level," Pamenter says. In some cases, individuals have what is called a hypermobile upper lip that reveals too much gum, Smith says. "This may be corrected by a Botox injection or lip repositioning procedure. Ideally, only about two millimeters of gum should be exposed," he says.

Experts recommend avoiding a too-perfect smile that may not look natural. "We like to ask the patient what they want to change about their smile," Rottman says.

"The object is to do what the patient wants with the greatest conservation of the tooth structure," Pamenter adds.
