Sipping from the fountain of youth

Wrinkles can jolt us into pleading with Father Time, but your skin actually starts aging in your 30s when your complexion becomes ruddy and age spots appear. Thatís when plastic surgeon Dr. Andrew Campbell with Quintessa Medical Spa says you should start sipping from The Fountain of Youth with Broad Band Light, a noninvasive skin therapy that gets a thumbs up from Stanford University researchers.

One of his patients was eager to share her enthusiasm. "Itís a miracle," she says. "The perimeter of my face was covered with age spots. I tried BBL and it was like someone turned back the clock 10 years."

BBL uses a broad range of frequencies with filters available for different procedures. "Instead of a flash lamp firing a bolt of energy creating peaks and valleys, we have two lamps firing a lower dose of energy in a large, square wave. Itís safer, gentler and more consistent," says Campbell.

Terri Edgar, a medical laser specialist at Quintessa, is just as excited as her patients about the outcomes. "I can do in one treatment with BBL what would take me two, three or four treatments with other systems."

The Stanford study says BBL rejuvenates the skin at a molecular level, with "a number of genes linked to the aging process being altered in expression Ö to more closely resemble younger skin." The research was funded by Sciton, the makers of BBL, still Campbell is quick to point out it is a clinical, blind study using scientific methodology.

"You take a sip from the fountain every few years when you see the first signs of aging and prolong your youthful appearance," Campbell says.

Expert skin-saving tips

"Donít do Botox unless you are committed to staying out of the sun. You need to change your behavior." Thatís what skin expert Dawn Sagrillo with Refresh told one of her 20-something clients who had the skin of a 40-year-old.

The sun is the biggest culprit in your war on ruddy skin and wrinkles.

Sagrilloís tips for a strong foundation: Limit sun exposure, wear broad spectrum sun block whenever you are outdoors, donít smoke, drink plenty of water and use skin products that contain a 15 to 30 percent concentration antioxidants such as zinc, vitamins A and E.
