A Pizza My Heart
Celebrate National Pizza Month by savoring a slice or two, perhaps in a neighborhood far from your own. Here are
eight great places across metro MKE to say cheese ... or
whatever toppings you like most.

1. Tenuta’s Italian Restaurant, Bay View

There’s a reason this Bay View institution boasts fans far beyond its own neighborhood. Founded by Italian immigrants, the always-packed place features old school pies done right, from the hand-tossed crusts to the homemade sauce from a Tenuta family recipe. For true pizza indulgence, go stuffed crust and add goat cheese and giardiniera peppers. www.tenutasitalian.com

2. San Giorgio Pizzeria Napoletana, downtown

Milwaukee meets Italy at this Old World Third Street spot from the owners of Calderone Club and certified by the Vera Pizza Napoletana. Each pie is an authentic Neapolitan pizza, made with naturally fermented dough and elegant toppings, all baked at an astounding 900 degrees. That same dough is repurposed into an indulgent Nutella calzone for dessert if you save room. www.sangiorgiopizza.com

3. Doc’s Dry Dock, Pewaukee

Any of the homemade pizzas at this local, lakeside legend will fill your stomach with deliciousness. But if you want to do good while you’re eating good food, order the tasty Mega Watt, created by NFL star J.J. Watt. A portion of each Mega Watt sale benefits the Justin J. Watt Foundation, which supports middle-school athletic programs. www.docsdrydock.com

4. Nashotah Club House, Nashotah

This Lake Country favorite was once a stagecoach stop and is now a great place for top-notch wings, burgers and, yes, pizza. Building-your-own is always a trusty option, but the signature pies are perfection — especially the Ace of Hearts, featuring homemade artichoke cream, tomatoes, garlic, basil and lots of cheese. www.nashotahclubhouse.com

5. The Riverview Inn, Saukville

Where else can you get a “Christmas Tree” year round? The Riverview’s meaty concoction, decorated with green peppers and black olives, is just one of the family-run business’ handmade “work of art” pizzas. With more than a dozen add-your-own toppings to choose from, you can create your own masterpiece too. www.riverviewinnpizza.com

6. Mequon Pizza Company, Mequon

This family-run pizzeria specializes in thin-crust and deep-dish pies, indulgent premium toppings (roasted garlic cloves, capicola, grilled pork belly) and switch-it-up sauces like BBQ and Alfredo. Call ahead to have your pie waiting when you arrive, or take it and bake it at home for a company-worthy pizza night. www.mequonpizzacompany.com

7. Maricio’s, West Bend

Yes, you can choose your own toppings, but your best bet is to head straight to the inventive signature pizzas like lasagna (exactly as it sounds), bacon cheeseburger (made with ketchup instead of tomato sauce) or the Cuban (a Cuban sandwich transformed into a pie). www.mariciosinbarton.com

Spinach, artichoke and chicken, Maricio’s

8. Jim’s Place, Slinger

This unfussy, family-owned Slinger spot scores major points for its gluten-free crust. All your usual topping favorites are available, but if you’re feeling fancy, add pineapple, artichoke hearts, fresh spinach, jalapenos or banana peppers and have your pizza your way.
