From hyper to happy

Amy Ammen and Kitty Foth-Regner co-wrote a book about calming your hyper dog down.

Dogs can provide incomparable companionship and unconditional love, but if your pooch has some behavior problems, it can be a source of embarrassment or exasperation for you. Milwaukee dog behavior expert Amy Ammen and Waukesha-based freelance copy writer Kitty Foth-Regner have collaborated on a new book designed specifically to change your dog’s world (and yours!) from hyper to happy.

Hip Ideas for Hyper Dogs (Wiley) is a comprehensive guide that provides proven solutions that can help you change your high-strung hound into a more cordial canine and it’s a fun read, to boot. "We don’t promise overnight results, but the book does provide a short course in obedience training basics and solutions to specific problems like aggression," says Ammen, one of the nation’s foremost authorities on training unusual breeds and solving difficult problems.

"Hyperactive dogs tend to be hyper-intelligent and it’s a shame to waste all that potential," says Ammen. Her schools, Amiable Dog Training, are located in Brookfield, Greenfield and West Allis. She also hosts Your Family Pet, a weekly radio show on WRRD-AM 540 in Milwaukee and does regular guest spots on television.

Ammen and Foth-Regner have worked together before as writer and editor, but this is the first time they have co-written a book. "The idea for this book came up a couple of years ago when I was complaining to Amy about how my dogs were so much more hyper than I would like," says Foth-Regner. "Amy told me they needed more direction and the idea for the book was born. We are hoping to help frustrated dog owners by telling them that you can achieve control with the proper communication and training essentials."
