Triple treat

While it’s something special to have an original piece of art, this year’s Channel 10 Great TV Auction National Collection piece offers up three times the uniqueness: It’s a collaborative piece completed by a trio of Wisconsin wildlife painters.

"We’ve collaborated together on occasion since the 1980s, and we’re all past Century Collection artists," explains Brookfield’s Scott Zoellick, who worked with Jerry Gadamus of the Stevens Point area and Don Kloetzke for the piece. "One of the three of us usually gets the initiative or energy going and the other two follow." Zoellick is known for his attention to detail and ability to capture a wildlife moment. Kloetzke often portrays the mystique of the deep woods. Gadamus does freehand airbrushing instead of relying on brushes or stencils.

For this particular piece, Zoellick’s initial suggestion was to feature swans. "Don had a somewhat different idea, but we were able to combine the two," says Zoellick. "He had met Owen Gromme in the 1970s, and he thought that since we were doing the National Collection piece, we could do a tribute to Gromme and one of his works."

The result is indeed a tribute to Gromme. In 1978, he created "Departure from Lake Katherine," which captured a flight of swans leaving a Wisconsin lake. The 2008 tribute piece by Zoellick, Gadamus and Kloetzke depicts a pair of regal trumpeter swans on a moonlit lake who, with their juvenile signet, have returned to the water.

The original piece as well as 100 signed and numbered prints, 10 of which will be remarqued, will be sold during the auction. The auction airs April 25 through May 3 on Channel 10.
