Making Majic

Some people need a B-school education, angel investors and years of on-the-job experience before starting a business.

Not Brookfield’s Mike Jurken.

The 21-year-old owner of Majic Enterprises started his business in sixth grade with a boom box.

"I first started out as a DJ, and then the business grew from there," he says. "I saved up my money and started buying sound and A/V equipment."

He formally founded Majic Enterprises in 2005, after observing an unmet niche in the Milwaukee area. "Our industry — sound, lighting, staging and event production — is a lot like catering," he explains. "There’s good food and bad food, and people remember both."

Jurken, a Marquette High School graduate and current UW-Madison senior, has already learned an important lesson: What sets his company apart is not just his leadership, but also his staff.

"We have people on staff who are highly qualified, including employees who have mixed sound for the Rolling Stones," he says. "But customer service is a huge priority for us, too. That sets us apart."

Members of the Majic staff, which swelled to five full-time and 30 part-time employees this summer, often work 80- to 90-hour work weeks during their busy season.

But the boss lets them play hard, too. "We have video games and a Wii at the office," admits Jurken. "We’re a pretty high energy place."
