  May 2003       April

Lutheran High School, celebrating its Centennial, is the oldest continuously operated community Lutheran high school in the United States. This school, which opened September 21, 1903, gave birth to Milwaukee Lutheran High School and Wisconsin Lutheran High School.

The very first home for Lutheran High School was the old
Immanuel Lutheran School which stood at 11th and Garfield.

location in 1908 on 13th and Reservoir, before any of its additions.

In 1955, Milwaukee Lutheran High School opened
to 806 students at 97th and Grantosa.

In 1959, Wisconsin Lutheran High School opened to
615 students at 84th and Bluemound.

Shorewood's earliest memorial to military personnel was erected on the high school grounds in 1943. Originally listing 1,200 names, the temporary honor roll had doubled in four years. When no agreement could be reached on a permanent memorial, the honor roll was veiled and taken down.

During the next 56 years, a number of attempts were made to install a permanent memorial in the village. With the celebration of Shorewood's Centennial in 2000, support for the project was renewed and a permanent plaque was erected. Dedicated on May 28, 2000, the 31' long cast bronze plaque, 'Honoring Shorewood Veterans Who Served in War and Peace,' is the centerpiece of Shorewood's Atwater Park Lake Michigan overlook.

Scheduled for 4 p.m. on Sunday, May 25, the now-annual Memorial Day weekend program will feature Milwaukee County Executive Scott Walker as keynote speaker, a color guard, bagpiper, the Shorewood High School Band, a 21-gun salute and taps.
