With his hands bound in chains, Mark Benson, 55, approaches a podium Monday during his hearing at the Waukesha County Courthouse.

WAUKESHA - An Oconomowoc man who surrendered his license to practice medicine was driving under the influence of prescription drugs when his Cadillac Escalade slammed into a car carrying Jennifer Bukosky, her children and another child Friday, according to a criminal complaint filed in the case Monday.

Mark M. Benson, 55, of the town of Summit, was ordered held on $1 million cash bail Monday after he was charged with two counts of homicide by intoxicated use of a vehicle, a count of homicide of an unborn child by intoxicated use of a vehicle, two counts of causing injury by the intoxicated use of a vehicle and a count of operating after revocation. He was ordered to appear in court again May 16.

The complaint in the case said Benson was on his way to a pharmacy to fill a prescription for Viagra and Cialis at 3:39 p.m. Friday when his truck slammed into the back of Bukosky’s car at Highway 67 and Pabst Road, where Bukosky was waiting for a traffic signal to change. A woman driving in front of Benson said his car was traveling "extremely fast," causing her to change lanes just before Benson’s car hit Bukosky’s, it alleged.

Police arrived to find all four people in Bukosky’s car unconscious, the complaint said.

Bukosky, who was a vice principal at Oconomowoc High School, died at the scene, as did her unborn child who was to be named Sophia. Her 10-year-old daughter, Courtney Bella, died after she was taken off life support Saturday, the complaint said. She had serious injuries to her face and chest.

A reconstruction of the accident estimated Benson’s speed to be 50 mph, in a 45-mph zone, and there was no indication of any braking in the eight seconds prior to the impact, the complaint said.
