Ben Nelson stands by the 15 mph sign in Lac La Belle near the spot where he was ticketed for speeding in his electric car.

LAC LA BELLE - Lake Country Municipal Court Judge Doug Stern has seen more than 50,000 speeding tickets during his 12 years on the bench, but town of Oconomowoc resident Ben Nelson’s case was the first of its kind.

Nelson was ticketed in October for driving his home-built electric car at 25 mph on Lac La Belle Drive - a 15 mph zone.

"I really was paying more attention to the electric meter than the speedometer," Nelson said. "When the officer asked me if I knew how fast I was going, I almost answered in amps."

Stern said Nelson’s speeding ticket might have made state history, but he upheld the $84 citation during Nelson’s court hearing Friday. He said Nelson had an excellent driving record, so he gave Nelson a reduced offense without demerit points.
