CEDARBURG - After months of aggressive chemotherapy and numerous
medical setbacks, there is finally good news to report on the health of
7-year-old Felix Boller.
An MRI at Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin last week showed no images
of the tumors that have infested his brain and spine for the past 10
months.
The doctor told Felix’s mother, Becky, that the tumors were
"virtually gone."
"He said they saw nothing in the spine, nothing in the ear canals,
nothing in the ventricles!" Boller wrote in her son’s online
journal at www.caringbridge.com.
But she cautioned Monday that the results do not mean that Felix is out
of danger.
"He’s not cancer-free by any means," she told the News
Graphic. "We’re hoping the chemotherapy gets any remaining tumors.
That’s the best you can hope for."
As recently as mid-December an MRI showed between eight and 15 tumors
in Felix’s brain and a new one forming in his ear canal.
He has been hospitalized at Children’s since Dec. 21, undergoing
painful radiation and high-dose chemotherapy treatments.
He was allowed to go home briefly over the weekend and early this week.
On Monday he stopped by Thorson Elementary School to visit with his
classmates and teachers.
"He said it was great," Becky Boller said of her son’s
visit.
Students and staff at Thorson were so pleased to hear the good news
about Felix last week, that they all wore the red T-shirts that were made
for a fundraising walk held in his honor last month.
"We were all so excited," Thorson Principal Karen Noel said
of the MRI results. "It feels like all of that positive spirit is at
least working."
Felix returns to Children’s Hospital today, where he will continue to
undergo high-dose radiation.
