TOWN OF MERTON - Arrowhead School Board members Wednesday approved a policy that calls for students involved in any extracurricular activity that includes performances or competitions to be eligible for random drug testing throughout their high school career, whether or not they are participating in an activity at the time the test is administered.

"Once they sign that (release) form, they’re basically on the hook for it," said Robert Rosch, school board vice president.

The board approved the policy by a vote of 8-1, with longtime school board member Judie Ristow opposing the motion.

According to the policy procedure, set to take effect at the start of the 2008-09 school year, the district will test for the presence of certain substances which may include, but are not limited to, "alcohol, metabolites of nicotine, marijuana, opiates, cocaine, amphetamines, phencyclidine (PCP), or any other substance which is defined as a controlled substance" by the state’s Uniform Controlled Substance Act.
