Brookfield Mayor Jeff Speaker, shown in his city hall office, says he doesnt believe he has used city resources for personal gain.

MILWAUKEE - Brookfield Mayor Jeff Speaker says he doesn’t know how City Hall’s address ended up on documents related to a property he owns in Milwaukee.

City Hall, 2000 N. Calhoun Road, is listed as an address for Speaker’s tax listing, which can be viewed on Milwaukee’s Department of Neighborhood Services Web site.

He contends he spent a great deal of time filling out paperwork, along with the real estate agent, when purchasing the property and the address could have been listed in error.

City ethics codes prohibit any city employee from using city resources for personal gain.

“I don’t think I did,” Speaker said in response to a question about whether he put the address on any documents. “It got there somehow, and that’s the point, right?”

He said he will be taking the necessary steps to remedy the situation in the coming days, as he had to leave town for a conference this week and won’t turn until later next week.

Speaker’s building, located at 4505 N. 36th St., was recently cited with dozens of code violations by the city’s department of neighborhood services, ranging from debris around the building to an uncapped gas line. Since Speaker took control of the building in May 2007, the department has issued more than 50 citations.

Under the previous owner, the building was cited for 26 violations between January 2006 and May 2007.

The Freeman submitted an open records request regarding Speaker’s use of city equipment to tend to his properties. There are no e-mail, Internet or cell phone records of Speaker using city property to look over his rental unit, said Laurie O’Shea, city administrative coordinator.
