Job outlook for new grads may surprise
Local experts say recruiting still strong, despite the economy

MILWAUKEE - As head of the career services center at Milwaukee’s second-largest university, Laura Kestner has one of the best local vantage points for how this year’s crop of graduates will fare in their job searches.

Despite an economy that some fear is in recession, Kestner said employers as a whole are as active as ever in recruiting students at Marquette University.

Earlier this year, for example, the university put on its largest career fair to date, with 138 employers coming to the school’s downtown campus. The average, Kestner said, is about 100 companies.

"We’re not seeing a slowdown," she said.

While economic conditions are having a definite impact on overall employment, she said there’s another trend going on that is acting as a counter-weight.
