SUSSEX - For those who think a local rally can’t do much good,
look no further than, or as far as, the Landstuhl Regional Medical
Center in Germany, where six laptop computers now sit because of
funds raised at the annual Proud American Rally in Sussex.
Last year’s rally raised $10,000 for the computers, which are
integrated with Webcams so injured soldiers can speak to loved ones
worldwide.
This year’s event will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Sussex
Village Park off Weaver Drive.
The annual event raises funds for Landstuhl, the largest American
military hospital outside the United States. In the last five years,
the rally has raised more than $43,000 for the USO, organizer Warren
Grund said.
"It’s a nice way to honor our veterans," he said.
The USO is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to support
the troops in a variety of ways.
The Sussex rally starts at 1:30 p.m. and will include food and
beverages, a disc jockey, performances of American favorites such as
"Proud to be an American" by a local singer, a silent
auction and raffle and guest speakers from the armed forces. Auction
items include a weekend Harley rental and a four-day pass to the
June Sprints event at Road America in Elkhart Lake, Grund said.
This year’s rally will also include a presentation of the Brass
Helmet Award to Charlie Battery from the Wisconsin National Guard’s
Sussex unit. The award recognizes overseas service by members of the
military.
Raffle tickets are available for $5 each or five for $20. Tickets
can be purchased ahead of time by calling Grund at 246-9346.
Anyone interested in donating to the cause or assisting with the
rally is also encouraged to call Grund.
