Networking raises security awareness

GRAFTON - In a simpler time, news about a recent theft or the latest money scam would spread around the Grafton business community like the plague. But as the primary dwelling place for Grafton’s business community has expanded from the downtown district to the east and southwest corridors, keeping tabs on the latest crime trends has become more of a challenge for store owners.

"Crime is mobile. It isn’t centered in one geographical area," said David Wenzler, an investigator for the Grafton Police Department. "I believe it’s important for businesses to communicate with each other (about) criminal activities; and having the police involved opens doors between us and them."

In an effort to bridge the communication gaps, the GPD started a group last fall called Proactive Businesses Against Crime (PBAC), best described as the business version of neighborhood watch.
