Elizabeth Huffman of Waukesha holds a 12-week-old puppy in her lap Tuesday as her wheaton terrier, Wheaties, background, explores the Humane Animal Welfare Society of Waukesha County grounds. Huffman adopted the puppy, who she named Mickey and was the first dog to be adopted at HAWS since a bacterial outbreak stopped dog adoptions at the shelter April 30.

WAUKESHA - Elizabeth Huffman waited four weeks to take her puppy, Mickey, home from the Humane Animal Welfare Society of Waukesha County.

The homecoming was delayed due to a bacterial outbreak at the shelter, which closed the facility at the end of last month, but Huffman, of Waukesha, finally was able to pick up Mickey on Tuesday afternoon.

The shelter opened its doors again Tuesday to resume normal dog adoptions.

Lynn Olenik, executive director of HAWS, said the 47 dogs in the shelter have been checked over by a veterinarian, but people are being asked to take the dog they adopt to their own veterinarian.

"We want them to be working with their personal veterinarian as much as possible," she explained.

The bacterial outbreak appeared here on April 16 when the first dog, who later died, showed symptoms of illness with a high fever, an inability to walk and labored breathing.
