Wrecker Gary Batzlaff sweeps debris off Highway 33W after a traffic accident Monday evening as motorists were caught off guard with icy road conditions in the West Bend area.

WEST BEND -
Winter got the jump on Washington County motorists on Monday.

The Washington County Sheriff’s Department reported more than 60 spin-outs, run-offs and fender-benders, said Washington County Sheriff’s Department Lt. Robert Martin.

"Mass chaos is probably the best way to describe it," Martin said.

Between 3 and 6:30 p.m., the Sheriff’s Department had 11 patrolmen, two supervisors and three detectives out handling nothing but traffic problems, he said. A spin-out in the southbound lane of Highway 45 had traffic going bumper to bumper between 5 and 6:30 p.m., Martin said.
