Water fix could cost ‘big dollars’
Estimates on getting lake 
water start at $50 million

WAUKESHA - It’s pretty unusual to see a $1 line item in a capital improvement budget, be it for a business or municipality.

But the Waukesha Water Utility’s five-year capital improvement plan that was approved Thursday night has two of them - one in 2011 and the other the following year.

"Those are simply place holders for our future water supply," said Dan Duchniak, general manager of the utility. "They could end up being big dollars."

The utility and the city have been searching for a new water source to replace the radium-tainted deep wells, and how and when that search ends has made planning particularly difficult and will likely come with a big price tag.
