WAUKESHA
- The economic downturn has brought an upswing in the number of
people going to food pantries in Waukesha County.
"We’re seeing a record number of people," said
Michael Jonas, associate director of the Food Pantry of Waukesha
County. "In September, we had the second-highest service month
in the Food Pantry’s 30-year history."
The number of households registering to receive a Thanksgiving
turkey is up 9 percent over last year, according to statistics
supplied by Jonas.
In September, 6,709 people were served, a 20 percent increase
over August.
In October, 130 new households were registered and 6,505 people
were served.
