WAUKESHA - Environmental groups are saying they are pleased with Waukesha’s plans in its application for a diversion of drinking water from Lake Michigan, but they’ll want to see more details of the plan before giving it any blessings.

Dan Duchniak, general manager of the Waukesha Water Utility, and Mayor Larry Nelson met with representatives of various environmental groups last week to share with them how they plan to return the water to the lake, a requirement of the Great Lakes Compact for any water diversion.

Duchniak said a study has shown two possible alternatives to send water from the city’s wastewater treatment plant as a return flow to the lake via either Underwood Creek in Wauwatosa or the Root River.
