Pastor Luke Emrich relaxes at the New Life Church in West Bend on Sunday after delivering a sermon.

TOWN OF BARTON - A town of Barton pastor said the tacit support he gave from the pulpit Sunday to presidential hopeful John McCain was not an outright endorsement.

Nonetheless, the action of Pastor Luke Emrich and five other pastors from around the nation violated federal tax laws during a so-called Pulpit Free-dom Sunday, according to Ameri-cans United for Separation of Church and State, a group that wants politics and religion kept separate. The group filed a complaint Monday with the federal Internal Revenue Service.

The Americans United group maintains Emrich told his congregation: "I’m telling you straight up I would choose life. I would cast a vote for John McCain and Sarah Palin."
