McKenna Chay of Cedarburg releases a young sturgeon into the Milwaukee River on Saturday at Thiensville Village Park. She was just one of many people who took part in the release of young sturgeon into the river to boost the threatened species’ population in the river.

THIENSVILLE - Potawatomi spiritual leader Billy Daniels released a five-inch sturgeon into the Milwaukee River at Thiensville Village Park on Saturday. It was the first of 767 sturgeon that would be released into the river that day and followed a chant and drum ceremony that Daniels and his group of three fellow American Indians had conducted to help ensure the well being of the fish.

Over the course of the early afternoon, more than 260 people released months-old lake sturgeon (acipenser fulvescens) into the river. Each paid $30 for the privilege - and the warm, good feeling - of having helped restore a threatened species into its once native habitat.
