A car whizzes past a
speed sensor along Highway 164 in the town of Richfield on
Thursday afternoon.
Speed sensors and indicators are now in
place on stretches of Highway 164 from the Washington County line to
just north of the unincorpated Pleasant Hill area.
State Department of Transportation officials say the equipment is
designed to slow motorists down in areas where the speed limit
changes from 55 mph to 40 mph.
Tom Heydel, DOT Southeast Region traffic engineer, said the
devices are powered by solar panels and include data collectors to
help the agency determine if they are accomplishing their objective.
