Attorney Michael Maistelman, left, confers with 97th District Democratic candidate Ruth Page Jones on Thursday during the recount at the Waukesha County Courthouse in the 97th District Democratic primary. After counting three wards, challenger Steve Schmuki asked for the recount to be called off.

WAUKESHA -
With the recount finished, public schools advocate Ruth Page Jones has maintained her eight-vote lead over attorney Steve Schmuki in the 97th Assembly District Democratic primary.

During the recount, which took more than five hours, the attorney for Schmuki asked for three wards to have their votes recounted. After no mistakes were found, he conceded the race to Jones.

The Freeman was unable to reach Schmuki for comment Thursday evening.

"I’m eager and excited to move ahead in the general campaign and work for change for Waukesha," Jones said. "I’m not surprised (with the results) because when I talked to people about it, I found out that there really wasn’t that much to find because basically we run ballots through scanners and they kick them out if there’s a mistake. Primary voters are regular voters and know how to vote, so they’re not going to make too many mistakes."
