Lanora Hurley, former manager of the now-closed Harry W. Schwartz Bookshop in Mequon, has reopened the store as the Next Chapter Bookshop.

MEQUON - For Lanora Hurley, the plot got a lot thicker this week.

Hurley, formerly the manager of the now-closed Harry W. Schwartz Bookshop on Port Washington Road, opened a new store on the same site Wednesday under the name Next Chapter Bookshop.

The Schwartz chain, operating in Milwaukee since 1927, closed all four of its stores this week. At two of the locations Mequon and the Downer Avenue store former managers set up independent bookstores in Schwartz’s wake.

“I bought the fixtures, the furniture, the equipment and the books left on the shelves effective the morning of March 31 and ... I renegotiated the lease with the landlord to be with me and set up a new business entirely,” Hurley said.
