MILWAUKEE - When New Berlin resident Leonel Marchan heard about the
Iowa Supreme Court’s decision to overturn a law prohibiting same
sex marriages, he was excited.
Just three years after Wisconsin residents voted to amend the
state constitution in order to prohibit gay marriage, Iowa, which is
generally considered more conservative, has moved in the opposite
direction. And this movement is something that gives Marchan, who is
gay, some hope for the future.
"For me, it gives me hope because it’s not one of the
states along the coast," he said. "It gives hope that
Wisconsin will turn around and be more accepting in the
future."
Gay marriages may begin as soon as April 24 in Iowa with the
court’s ruling, which would be a major setback to those who oppose
it. They would also be unable to stop it until at least 2012, when a
constitutional amendment could be presented to the voters.
