ELM GROVE - Voters approved the creation of an Elm Grove water utility Tuesday.

The utility will allow the village to charge for the water it provides. A total of 852 yes votes (52 percent) topped the 786 no votes (48 percent), according to unofficial election results provided by the village clerk’s office.

Elm Grove has been working on obtaining Lake Michigan water for the last few years. After an agreement between Wauwatosa and the village failed in 2005, Elm Grove decided to approach the Milwaukee Water Works on its own. It also approached Brookfield about obtaining water from the city. The village is currently served by wells.
