OCONOMOWOC - The city submitted an application to the Wisconsin Department of Transportation on Wednesday requesting nearly $2 million in federal stimulus funds to reconstruct Summit Avenue from Main Street to Thackeray Trail this summer.

Public Works Director Mark Frye said Summit Avenue was not on the city’s road repair schedule, but because the roadway is nearing the end of its life, he wanted to take advantage of the available federal funds.

"We looked at this as an excellent use of the stimulus funds," Frye said. "If they do say no, at least we have it engineered and ready to go."

If the DOT doesn’t approve the project, construction will be postponed.

Frye said the same stretch of road was under construction in 1992, when the section of Highway 67 was legally transferred to the city’s jurisdiction. Summit Avenue is the main access route to Oconomowoc High School and Oconomowoc Memorial Hospital and one of two main thoroughfares in the city, but Frye expects the traffic to be manageable during the five-month construction project.
