Doyle's budget includes 
changes for driving
Traffic stops for seat belts, intersection cameras among provisions

WAUKESHA - While everyone knows Gov. Jim Doyle's proposed 2009-11 biennium budget will affect tax bills, not too many know it could affect how people drive.

According to the budget proposal, there are provisions that would allow for photo radar stations for police officers, the ability to put up cameras at intersections and the freedom for authorities to pull someone over for not wearing his seat belt.

According to the budget, the provisions are aimed at making drivers safer and helping police enforce the law.

"The concept of using photo radar or traffic intersection cameras to enforce traffic laws is a hotly debated topic nationally," said Waukesha Police Capt. Mark Stigler in an e-mail. "Right now in Wisconsin it is not legal. If the law changes, that would have to be something we would need to look at as a community."

Lots of vehicles run red lights at intersections, Stigler said, which causes a lot of accidents.
