WAUKESHA - While everyone knows Gov. Jim Doyle's proposed 2009-11
biennium budget will affect tax bills, not too many know it could
affect how people drive.
According to the budget proposal, there are provisions that would
allow for photo radar stations for police officers, the ability to
put up cameras at intersections and the freedom for authorities to
pull someone over for not wearing his seat belt.
According to the budget, the provisions are aimed at making
drivers safer and helping police enforce the law.
"The concept of using photo radar or traffic intersection
cameras to enforce traffic laws is a hotly debated topic
nationally," said Waukesha Police Capt. Mark Stigler in an
e-mail. "Right now in Wisconsin it is not legal. If the law
changes, that would have to be something we would need to look at as
a community."
Lots of vehicles run red lights at intersections, Stigler said,
which causes a lot of accidents.
