"I got laid off from my job," said the West Bend West senior.

Preschat’s roofing company went through a large round of cuts a couple of months ago, triggering a lifestyle change. Preschat has cut back on his paint ball hobby and CD purchases.

"Can’t spend. Have to save your money," he said. "Instead of going out to hang out, just stay home."

Wise money management - from credit to car insurance - is what West Bend’s Cindy Mennig and Kewaskum’s Tim Rohlinger stress in their high school personal finance classes. There may never be an easier or more difficult time to teach it.

Not all students are impacted like Preschat. Sometimes, students’ parents are laid off or their parents’ retirement portfolios have tumbled in value.
