WAUKESHA - The potential recall of Gov. Jim Doyle has taken another step toward becoming a reality as leaders of groups behind the effort announced they’re filing as a political action committee today.

Wisconsinites Interests Now and the Citizens for Responsible Government filed papers for the Recall Doyle exploratory PAC in Madison today, which will allow them to start fundraising and advertising the effort.

Although they didn’t give a specific time frame, leaders of the groups said they’ll begin collecting signatures "within weeks."

"We’ve gotten extraordinary support," said Vince Schmuki, a representative of WIN. "There is obviously a lot of dissatisfaction out there."

Schmuki and others have attended state budget hearings in the metro Milwaukee area during the past week to show their dissatisfaction with Doyle and his proposed 2009-11 biennial budget. During the events, Schmuki said they’ve seen a lot of support from frustrated taxpayers.

They made the announcement the recall was moving forward at a Monday hearing in Racine. They also unveiled a Web site, www.recalldoyle.com, which lists their grievances against the governor and his budget.

The site, along with a Facebook group, is being used to recruit volunteers for the recall. Organizers are aiming for 10,000 volunteers before they proceed in starting to collect the 540,000 signatures needed to recall Doyle.
