After years of absence, Latin Mass will be held once again today at the Upper Basilica at Holy Hill.

Papal direction and the desire of Roman Catholics to experience the mystery of the High Mass in Latin - with some readings and the sermon in English - are among the reasons for its return and rising popularity in the United States, priests associated with the Mass said.

The Rev. Canon Olivier Meney of St. Stanislaus in Milwaukee will celebrate the Mass. He will be assisted by a deacon and sub-deacon with a multi-parish choir, many altar boys and two musicians bringing the traditional Mass to life.

“My advice is always just come and watch. Let yourself be taken by the beauty and the magic,” said Meney, who celebrates the Latin Mass daily at St. Stanislaus on the South Side.

It’s also a pilgrimage to celebrate a day early Mother Mary’s Feast Day at the National Shrine of Mary Help of Christians.
