Traffic on Juneau Boulevard passes the Elm Grove railroad crossing Tuesday where a minivan was struck by a train on Memorial Day.

ELM GROVE - The day after a train accident injured a man rescuing his family and a police officer that helped him, the Elm Grove Police Department continues to investigate and feel the effects of the Memorial Day accident.

"This has impacted us immensely. Many of the officers witnessed this and (Officer) John (Krahn) getting hit," Elm Grove Assistant Chief Gus Moulas said.

Krahn, a 17-year veteran with the Elm Grove Police Department, was injured Monday as he attempted to help Scott Partenfelder, 47, of West Allis pull his wife and small child from a minivan stuck in the path of an oncoming 94-car freight train.

A Froedtert Memorial Lutheran Hospital spokeswoman said Partenfelder was still in critical condition late Tuesday evening. His mother-in-law, Pam West, said he was expected to recover.

Krahn remained in satisfactory condition late Tuesday.

The accident occurred on the railroad tracks at Elm Grove Road and Juneau Boulevard, just before the community's Memorial Day parade at 9:30 a.m. Monday, leading to the cancelation of the annual event.
