WAUKESHA - Raised Grain Brewing Co. took home the gold for its Spring City Saison beer during an international competition this past weekend.

More than 6,000 beers representing breweries from Vermont to Vietnam were submitted reflecting more than 100 different styles to the U.S. Open Beer Championship.

Spring City Saison is a Belgian-style farmhouse ale brewed with local honey and named after the hometown nickname for the city it is brewed in.

Dr. Jimmy Gosset, one of the brewers and owners of Raised Grain, has roots in Belgium. He traveled back to Belgium as a child to visit his family, which still lives there. On a recent trip back, Jimmy and Dr. Scott Kelley, brewmaster and owner, took inspiration and brewed a beer similar to what Jimmy enjoyed while visiting his family.

"We're ecstatic that we've won a Gold Medal for our Spring City," said Kelley. "Jimmy and I have been inspired by Belgian beers since we started home brewing together seven years ago. This is an inspired beer - both from our Belgian and our Waukesha roots!"

"A saison is a beer for the people, so naturally we chose the name Spring City for our beer," said Gosset. "Waukesha is our home town, and I bring a lot of Belgian influence to this beer."
