WAUKESHA — Twenty years after Casa del Rio first opened its doors, the family-friendly Mexican eatery will once again welcome Waukesha residents.

The Gonzalez and Chacon families decided to come out of retirement after leasing out the building four years ago. Co-owner Nancy Gonzalez explained that both families missed working in the restaurant since it had become like a second home to them.

“We really missed the customers,” said Gonzalez. “I made a lot of really good friends, and I would see them around town and they’d ask why we closed.”

She says most of the same staff from the last 20 years will continue working at Casa del Rio. There has been some downsizing to the menu, but Gonzalez says some customer favorites will be offered on Saturdays and Sundays as weekend specials.

“We have different cooks and that made it difficult because it needs to have the same flavor as before,” said Gonzalez. “Everyone does it a little different, but I think we’ve managed to do it.”

She says she is most excited to see the families she’s connected with over the last 20 years once again. Gonzalez has seen customers grow up and then welcome their first children during her time as Casa del Rio. She emphasizes that the restaurant is truly a family-oriented establishment and all are welcome with open arms.

Casa del Rio’s grand reopening is scheduled for today through Sunday at 408 E. Main St. The six days will be filled with a wide range of activities.
