MUKWONAGO — Express your creativity and discover the artist in you at The Rustic Orchid, in the heart of Mukwonago at 111 N. Rochester St.

Owned by Amanda Brissette and her husband Nate, the crafting studio has only been open for a few months.

The Rustic Orchid is a studio that teaches people how to create custom wood signs and other Do-It-Yourself (DIY) projects through workshops, according to its website. In fact, the studio is most accustomed to large groups, painting parties or fundraisers.

The way it works is that people can pick and choose from the shop’s various designs. Once they do, a stencil for their sign will be created. However, people can also suggest their own designs.

When the workshop begins, there will be an introduction and a demonstration. Afterwards, participants are free to start their project. While people are waiting for stain or paint to dry, they can socialize with their friends.

“Coming in here is like having a place where you can get together with your friends and family,” said Amanda.

But these workshops are not just for adults. The Rustic Orchid uses non-toxic paint and stains, which provides a friendly environment for younger artists and even for pregnant mothers.

Not crafty or artsy? Amanda said that’s not a problem. The workshop is taught by professional artists and fulltime crafters who will help every step of the way. Not to mention that you don’t even need your own supplies.

“Everything is ready to go when they come in here,” said Amanda. “We make it really easy, so people can come in and just enjoy themselves.”

Workshop projects at The Rustic Orchid range from repurposing old cheese drying trays made in the 1920s to old and unused windows, said Amanda.

She wants people to come and realize those Pinterest projects that they’ve always wanted to create,

but don’t know how. For this reason, The Rustic Orchid has “Pin Parties,” or workshops where a popular Pinterest Pin is chosen as a project.

Sharing her passion

Amanda said The Rustic Orchid Workshop stems from a wall decal business that she started with her husband 7.5 years ago. She said she started the workshop because she wanted to share her passion for crafting with others.

“Art has always been a very big part of my life and it’s always gratifying for me to motivate people to be creative,” said Amanda. “I just thought it would be really fun to open a business like this in the area since there wasn’t anything else around to teach people to make signs.”

Today during Midnight Magic, which is Mukwonago’s holiday celebration, The Rustic Orchid will have open painting where anyone can walk in without an appointment from 4 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.

Besides workshops, there are several simple and rustic farmhouse-style signs to purchase in-store. The Rustic Orchid requires reservations a month in advance although some exceptions can be made. Pricing varies based on project choice and size. The general price range is between $35 and $75.
