WAUKESHA — The Waukesha Fire Department responded to a report of a small fire at Sendik’s Food Market on Meadowbrook Road around 10:30 a.m. Thursday.

When firefighters arrived the store was in the process of evacuating patrons into the parking lot because the building was full of smoke from a small fire in a rooftop heating unit, said Waukesha Fire Battalion Chief Jim Haakenson.

It took over an hour to put out the fire and clear the building of smoke, Haakenson said, adding that it’s difficult to assess the cost of damage because businesses that sell food are required to have their inventory assessed before it can be sold after a fire.
