GRAFTON — Megan Schelwat said her new job with the Grafton Area Chamber of Commerce is “everything I could ask for and more.”

Schelwat was named the special events and tourism promotion director, responsible for event planning and execution for annual Celebrate Grafton events like the Giro d’Grafton, Grillin’ in Grafton and Fall into Grafton, as well as promoting tourism throughout Grafton.

“There’s many people that would give anything to have a job that allowed you to have fun, meet amazing people and give you the feeling that you are appreciated for what you do,” Schelwat said.

The Oak Creek native and current Cedarburg resident graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee with a bachelor’s degree in journalism, advertising and media studies.

Schelwat’s first position during college was as a marketing assistant at a law office. After getting a taste for event planning and sponsorships, she said knew she had an interest that would hopefully take her somewhere someday.

“I wanted something more out of the position, but wasn’t sure what at the time,” she said. “I learned later I wanted to be more hands-on in planning and making decisions to influence the outcome of events, advertising and media planning. I wanted to impact how the events went and what kind of effect they had on the business I worked for.”

Schelwat has also worked in senior housing and health care.

She said she is thrilled with her new position at the Grafton Area Chamber of Commerce and has been immersing herself in the community to learn all that she can.

“I’ve already gone to a few board meetings in regards to committees I will be a part of, or to learn more about the functions of the chamber and how everything ties together, Schelwat said. “It’s been wonderful so far, and I look forward to learning more and meeting more people within our great community. I’m just soaking everything in like a sponge.”
