OCONOMOWOC — Oconomowoc will soon be home to a new authentic Italian restaurant on the first floor of the Eagles Landing condominium building at 128 W. Wisconsin Ave.

Lago Su Bella owner Mike Bertrand said the restaurant will be authentically Italian and not the typical spaghetti and meatballs- and lasagna-type restaurant.

“We’re going to have real deal Italian,” Bertrand said. “Tuscan, Mediterranean style Italian with lots of seafood, lighter fare, bright sauces, small plates and homemade pasta.”

Bertrand said he wants to break down the menu regionally to offer customers what they would be eating in different areas of the European nation.

“One of the things we learned when we went to Italy was that the food varies from neighborhood to neighborhood and from city to city,” Bertrand said. “We wanted to be as authentic as possible and to emulate different flavors and tastes from as it is and would be in Italy.”

Oconomowoc is overdue for a nicer restaurant, Bertrand said, and hopes Lago Su Bella can fill that void.

Bertrand said the restaurant will have a sizable bar, seat 80 to 90 people and feature a unique gathering table.

“It’ll be first-come, first-served. It’s going to be a long banquet table that’ll seat about 14 to 18 people and you sit next to strangers and talk, just like you’d do it if you were in Italy,” Bertrand said.

“Dining is a very social engagement in Italy and we’re trying to create that here.”

Bertrand said he hopes Lago Su Bella will be open to the public in early 2019.

“Our goal is Feb. 1, that’s the day that we have the big red X on the calendar,” Bertrand said. “That’s our target week.”
