MEQUON — Screaming Tuna, a sushi restaurant and Asian bistro, will be part of the Mequon Public Market, developers of Spur 16 announced Wednesday.

Owners Cristian Vega and Jeff Bronstad opened Screaming Tuna Sushi in 2011 in Milwaukee’s Walker’s Point neighborhood, which is just south of downtown.

“We looked at a move to Mequon in the past, but never saw a space that fit the style of Screaming Tuna – until Spur 16,” Vega said in a news release. “We couldn’t be more excited about the plans for the Mequon Public Market.

“With our emphasis on community, we’re thrilled at the prospect to work in an environment with so many names we love,” he added. “It doesn’t hurt that the group behind the development is pretty rad, too.”

Screaming Tuna will be among 10 vendors who will occupy the spacious hall now being crafted from a vintage Public Works building in the development at 6300 W. Mequon Road.

Other already announced Mequon Public Market tenants are Happy Dough Lucky, Bavette La Boucherie, Café Corazon, Beans & Barley, Anodyne Coffee Roasting Co. and Purple Door Ice Cream. It will be next door to St. Paul Fish Co., which will occupy the old “smokestack building.”

“We have curated an outstanding group of locally owned restaurants that have come together to be a part of the Mequon Public Market at Spur 16,” said Jenni Vetter, director of operations at Mequon-based Shaffer Development, which is building the project that will also include townhomes and apartments.

Cindy Shaffer, owner of Shaffer Development, which was selected by the city to develop the property on Mequon Road between the Ozaukee Interurban Trail and Buntrock Avenue, said she is proud to have Screaming Tuna at Spur 16. Screaming Tuna focuses on serving sustainable seafood.

The first parts of the development are slated to open early in 2019. Shaffer said Spur 16 has already leased several residential units and is currently offering hard-hat tours of the townhomes.
